Engineered Structural Composites

Markets

Aerospace

QCI materials have been widely used in commercial, military, general aviation and rotary aircraft applications for the past 20 plus years.

Lytex® epoxy glass and carbon fiber reinforced materials have been specified and used by many of the major aircraft manufactures and prime contractors.

Lytex® 9063 glass reinforced (63%) epoxy carries various OEM material specifications and is used by Boeing, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, GE Aviation, Sikorsky, Bell and many other major aerospace and defense contractors.

Other variations of Lytex®, including fire retardant, extended shelf life, reduced density, have also been developed and used for specific aerospace applications.

Lytex® 4149 and 4197 chopped carbon fiber epoxy materials developed for aerospace applications have seen increased usage as the composite content in aircraft continues to grow. These materials also carry specifications with a number of key aerospace OEMs.

QCI Lytex® materials provide net shape compression molded solutions in tertiary and secondary structures. For metal substitution weight reduction, cost reduction and prevention of galvanic corrosion are key benefits derived from compression molded Lytex®. In addition, molded Lytex® parts solutions enable cycle time and cost reduction over layup prepreg processing.

QCI phenolic materials provide the advantages of net shape compression molding along with enhanced temperature, flame smoke and toxicity performance, making them well suited to aircraft interior applications.Top

Transportation

High performance automotive:

QCI carbon fiber and glass fiber materials have been designed into various renowned high performance platforms. The advantages offered by QCI’s carbon fiber advanced molding compounds (AMC) in net shape compression molded parts has enabled vehicle designers to capitalize on the high stiffness, weigh reduction and part count reduction benefits derived from QCI AMC-8590 chopped carbon fiber vinyl ester ESC material.

High performance platforms utilizing QCI materials include the Dodge Viper, Corvette Z06, Ford GT and other platforms currently being released or in development in Asia, Europe & North America.

Higher Volume Automotive:

QCI Polyester and Vinyl Ester glass reinforced materials such as QC-7753, QC-8770 and QC-8777 have been used in main stream automotive applications such as heat shields, fuel vapor canister brackets, radiator brackets & sun roof drainage channels. Weight reduction and parts consolidation as well as reduced tooling cost continue to drive interest and use of QCI materials in this market.

Rail:

Rail applications for QCI materials include locomotive switchgear applications using glass reinforced vinyl esters and window surrounds using carbon fiber vinyl ester on high speed bullet trains where the cumulative weight saving per train set is substantial.Top

Defense / Military

QCI Lytex materials have been applied to parts solutions in military aviation applications such as radomes, strong-backs, ammunition cartridge handling guides and rotary aircraft components.

Other military applications include munitions containers, packaging, rifle components including hand guards, weapons components and transportation parts.

Compression molded QCI materials offer the advantages of weight reduction combined with high rates of production.Top

Marine

Weight reduction, corrosion resistance and high strength to weight ratio benefits provided by QCI materials are well valued in the Marine market. QCI glass reinforced hybrid polyester and vinyl ester materials QC-8700 and QC-8800 have been utilized on structural components such as out drive gimbal housings, gimbal rings & cowlings, power boat seat shells and personal water craft longerons (internal stringers).Top

Safety

QC-8800 is widely used by the leading firemen’s helmet producers because of its unique physical and processing properties.

Other uses include bump caps, foundry helmets, composite toe caps and other firefighting equipment including a casing for fireman’s person monitor and alarm system and back packs for breathing air cylinders.Top

Industrial

QCI Engineered Structural Composites have provided multiple benefits in a wide variety of general manufacturing, chemical, process, construction and oil & gas applications.

  • Valve bodies – Chemical & Process Industries
  • Springs – Industrial, Furniture
  • High temperature (600 F) load bearings – Steel Mills & Beverage Cans
  • Circular Saws – Composite base
  • Couplings – Drive equipment
  • Down hole plugs and components – Oil patch

Medical

Carbon fiber and glass fiber QCI materials provide compression molded part solutions for prosthetic feet and x ray translucent structural and semi structural components.
